Jobs are back with new financial year! In India and in many parts of the world where business follow the April to March Financial year, the jobs are back. The number of job posting on the job sites are increasing, the number of pages in the employment section of newspapers and magazines are getting more and more and so are the call that job seekers get from consultants. Jobs are back folks! Really Jobs are back.

Most of the large employers freeze their recruitments towards the end of financial years in a bid to show better financial results. Even the critical positions are not filled and existing employees are asked to double up for the new requirements. Most of these positions suddenly open up after the new financial years is started.

But this time around the new positions are not only the held up positions but also the growth positions. That is why I am terming it as – Really Jobs are back folks!

Jobs are back? so what?

Jobs are back so tighten up your belts, but do not rush to the jobs. In my opinion the initial flood of offers will not be competitive for the job seekers. Best is that you play a wait and watch game for few months. Test the waters and if in the past one year or so you have not taken any interviews – take a few with lesser companies for few months.

For the experienced professionals the jump start in the salary will start from June end onwards. in about three months time the companies will realize the market situation and will come to the negotiating tables. That is when the experienced job seekers will be able to make most of the killing – say in second quarter of the year. The third quarter will be more competitive as gold rush will see many new candidates turning the tables. Candidates should try to land up into a new job during the second quarter.

If you are a entry level job seeker on non campus market – you may have some tough competition and unemployed’s from last two years are now well trained and roaring to jump on the jobs.

This time go prepared ..

This time when you go to job market – go prepared. Go prepared with a killer resume, go prepared with the skills to negotiate and go prepared to get inside your dream employer. There are many resume writing services who will be helpful. Take help of professional consultants to prepare yourself for your job search. Bud my advise is that this time go prepared to market to see the difference it makes.

Changing Industry is a well thought process

Tips on How to get into a Job in a different industry

Looking for some expert tips on How to get into a Job in a different industry? Help is here if you want to change the industry you are working in and make a career in a different industry.

When applying for such a position in an industry different than yours keep in mind some important tips …

Identify Industry: If you are looking for a job in a different industry – First, see what industries are most portable with your skills.

Do your research: We advise you to do your research and based on public research you will be in a position to demonstrate some basic insight into that industry. However be cautious and upfront indicationg that you have a thin knowledge which is just based on publicly available information. Make sure you do not project yourself as know-it-all fellow.

Do not oversell in resume: Do not oversell by relating your experience in minute details with their industry. All you need to do is to cleverly indiacet key similarities in your cover letter and remain silent on the rest. If your résumé indicates that you are a solid management asset, you will sure get a call-back.

Make a case: If you are interested in making a transition to a new industry you must understand how to make a strong case for such a move. You must be able to make a connection between their current industry and a new sector and demonstrate their value proposition to prospective employers. Identifying transferable skills is the first step in building that connection from one industry to another.

During the interview: You need to help the hiring company see how well you understand their customers, products, business norms, metrics and processes. You must relate your level of understanding about their business and indicate how you would contribute to their personal (hiring manager’s) and organization goals. Then, show the interviewers you understand the applications of the knowledge you bring to the table and that you can help them monetize that knowledge. Finally, make sure you understand the gaps you don’t fill well and speak to those in a positive way.

Do you have any experience in changing the industry? If yes share your experience by writing in the comments below.

It seems the companies are afraid of downfall in employee morale in the recssionary times – and negative feelings against them due to recent layoffs.

The top four Indian IT firms — Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys Technologies, Wipro and HCL Technologies have all declined to participate in the annual Dataquest IDC Best Employers Survey. This is for the first time in eight years history of this prestigious survey.

Here is a list of IT best employers in 2008

Now in the absence of these bigwigs who used to be among top 20 in the HR survey the Best Employer survey will have no meaning. In our opinion there should be an informal survey and these companies should be rated on that.

Write your own career path

Want to write your own Career Path? Here is some help from CareerCola.com on writing Career Path.

Why write your own Career Path?

Career Path or Career Planning are much abused words in HR lexicon – many times used by HR practitioners to fulfill their agenda. You can not leave the important aspects of YOUR career in the hands of some “HR practitioner” whom you barely know and who may not even know anything more about you except your name and designation. You have to take control and write your own career path.

Never accept the paths given to you – make your own

Yes – organization have set paths based on concrete hierarchy. This makes the options available to you limited. Organizations also are lazy – late to react to changing demands and hence they are always late to change the career paths, roles and organization structure – most of the times unless they are forced to do. If you accept the paths given to you by Human Resources or your supervisor – you are doing injustice to yourself. You have to make your own – based on your goals and dreams. If later you find they match a path in organizations book – OK. If or if not – you have your own path.

How to write your own career path?

Here are few recomemnded steps – if you dont like them find your own..

Start with end in mind – what is your goal in career? What you want to achieve?

Identify where you are

Note down various paths to reach that goal

Select the best scenario and make it your plan A

Select the second and third best to make Plan B and Plan C (life is not predictable always)

Now check if your plans have any similarity with organizations Career Path

Discuss them with your mentor, supervisor and HR and formalize

Remember – you have to write you career path otherwise someone else will write it!

Air India Top Management is expected to go throgh a major shake up considering the recent trouble they landed up into. It seems that Government has given them mandate to either shape up or ship out!

There are reports that entire top management of Air India will be recast in the coming 30 days. It is said that some of the old time directors are going to be asked to leave. Air India will be looking for a Professional Chief Operating Officer. However what needs to be seen if they will do away with a beurocrat taking up the position of CMD (whether the CMD Arvind Jadhav will continue in office)?

Air India will be roping in some of the leading corporate personalities and management gurus as independent directors. Government it seems is happy with the help they have got from the directors they appointed in the Satyam case. So they expect these corporate honchos to put Air India back on track and ensure that it turns around to profitability.

Layoffs expected?

The future for the Air India employees will be tough as the new decision makers will sure take the togh decision and this will sure lead to layoffs. No independet director will take this job unless they are given full power to take decisions. So no matter what the layoffs will come to Air India – hard or soft. What needs to be seen is how they will tackle it. It may be recalled that Government has forced Jet airways to take back its laid off employees earlier. Now the ball is in Government’s court and see what they will do with the excess staff they have?

Job cuts across the globe in various industries are piling up as more and more companies announce lay off plans.

The job losses in this downturn are hitting workers across all income levels and job categories.Job losses are piling up and there are more jobs to be cut in the future. There are lot of people being handed pink slips across the globe. In this gloomy scenario, people are frantically looking for ways to cope with the situation.Nokia, world’s largest mobile phone maker, will be pruning its global workforce again by another 490 jobs, with as many as 170 positions to be slashed in logistics, production management and production support areas. American Express has announced that it will be eliminating about 4,000 jobs as part of a plan to reduce another $800 million in costs for the remainder of the year.

The deepening global downturn has left more Americans unemployed than in nearly 30 years. The speed and scale of recent layoffs are staggering, but heavy industry jobs have been hit particularly hard.In most cases, the cutbacks reflects a bleak 2009 outlook for national economies stricken by severe downturns across the globe. Manufacturers and other businesses continue to
slash production and payrolls to survive tough times. In 2008, the United States economy lost 3 million jobs, and 600,000 more in the last month alone.China, the world’s third-largest economy after the U.S. and Japan, is one of the only major economies still growing, though its growth slowed sharply in the past year. The government says about 20 million migrants have lost their jobs and leaders worry about possible unrest.

Air France-KLM is looking to shed 3,000 jobs in its current financial year:
The cuts come in addition to 2,700 posts eliminated in the fiscal year to 31 March 2009, as the airline industry suffers a fall in demand. Air France-KLM is expecting to shed 3,000 jobs in its current financial year, in a bid to further cut costs. The firm separately announced a tie-up with Delta Airlines on selected routes to share revenues and costs. Delta is the world’s largest airline, while Air France is the largest carrier in Europe. The deal, which is initially for a 10-year period, covers all flights between North America and Europe, Amsterdam and India, and between North America and Tahiti.

Hewlett-Packard has decided to slash more than 6,400 jobs… :
The company, which has a strong presence in India, has reported a 17 per cent fall in profits at USD 1.7 billion for the three months ended April 30, 2009. New York Technology major Hewlett-Packard, has posted a steep decline in second quarter profits, will be cutting more than 6,400 jobs or about two per cent of its global workforce in the coming months. Revenue from outside the United States in the second quarter accounted for 64 per cent of total revenue, with revenue in the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) declining 12 per cent over the prior-year period while accounting for nine per cent of total HP revenue,” the statement noted. In May last year, Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced that it would acquire technology services company EDS for about USD 13.9 billion.

Dutch state-controlled bank ABN Amro plans to axe a net of 4,000 to 5,000 jobs:
DUTCH STATE-controlled bank ABN Amro posted a €886 million after-tax loss in the first quarter, with most of the total incurred by units in the process of being transferred to Royal Bank of Scotland.A consortium including RBS, Fortis and Spanish banking group Santander bought ABN Amro in 2007 for €70 billion. After a crisis of confidence, the Dutch government took over Fortis’s local operations, including its interests in ABN Amro, last October for €16.8 billion. The complexity of the two series of transactions is such that the process of separating the ABN Amro businesses acquired by the Dutch state from the businesses acquired by RBS is still ongoing.ABN said last week it planned to cut 4,000 to 5,000 jobs and up to €1.3 billion in costs over the course of its integration with Fortis Bank Nederland. That integration is the next step the

Irish lender ACC Bank has announced that it will cut 200 jobs and close 16 branches around the country:
ACC Bank is to cut 200 jobs and close 16 branches around the country and has blamed the global financial crisis, the sharp deterioration in the Irish economy and collapse of the property market for the move. The lender to small and medium-sized businesses and the agricultural sector, which is owned by Dutch financial services provider Rabobank, will close branches between October and next April.

As a clear sign of tough financial times, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) saw a record number of people emptying their PF accounts recently. In 2008-09, it rose by a record 32%, up from a 10 per cent increase the year before. The total number of withdrawal applications filed across India crossed the 1 crore mark. In Delhi alone, the average applications filed per month rose to 1 lakh between Oct 2008 and Mar 2009, from 30,000 between Apr and Sept 2008. According to a labour ministry report, about five lakh people lost their jobs between Oct and Dec 2008.

The rate of unemployment in India is increasing and the fact that many employees are still sitting on the bench. No one is immune from layoffs. As layoffs began — about 5 lakh people lost their jobs between October and December 2008, according to a Labour Ministry report — those who had been riding the wave and taken loans for everything, from homes to luxury cars to vacations, were bowled a googly. Most of the applications were filed between October 2008 and March 2009, as the effects of the downturn began to set in.The number of withdrawal applications filed across India crossed the 1 crore
mark in 2008-09.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has confirmed that the number of people emptying their PF accounts — seen as a last resort in times of financial distress — has risen by a record 32 per cent in the financial year 2008-09, up from a mere 10 per cent increase the year before. In Delhi and Mumbai, there has been a similar rise in the number of PF claims filed. In Delhi, the average number of applications filed a month rose from 30,000 between April and September 2008 to over 1 lakh between October 2008 and March 2009. Mumbai has seen an increase of 30,000 applications a month.

Most financial advisers suggest saving the equivalent of six months’ salary to tide employees over if they lose their job. People will probably need more if they have the family and if they are the primary source of earning. But if times are good, most people do not think about how they spend money. If a person is facing a layoff, he need to come up with a plan for cutting expenses.Develop a budget that eliminates most unnecessary expenses, but don’t completely cut entertainment.

We know how much the mortgage or rent and monthly car payments are, but we don’t pay attention to daily spending. How much do we spend going out to eat? What is our weekly grocery bill? What about utilities and insurance? Being more
aware of how you spend your money will cause you to spend it more carefully.Losing your job can be emotionally upsetting, and it can have negative implications for your financial health, as well. Without a steady paycheck, you’ll likely face a number of difficult financial decisions. This is no time to buy that new car or DVD player. If you are already in debt, particularly credit card debt, you may want to consolidate your loans into a single monthly payment with a lower interest rate. If you own a home, consider a low-interest home equity loan.

A number of governmental programs are available to help you in the event of a layoff — take advantage of them. You will be able to stretch your savings if you have additional income. Consider part-time work while you look for a job.
While it would be best if you could find temporary or part-time work in your field, your hobbies and other interests may offer possibilities for income. Remember: Your primary job is to find a new job. Any part-time work should allow time and flexibility to actively pursue your job search.

May of the employees are being on the layoff list these days. How to answer this question – Why were you removed from your previous job?

Literally there are thousands of questions that you could be asked during an interview. The typical Question asked in the interview is “Why are you leaving your job?” or “Why did you leave your job?” These question takes lot of time for a candidate to reply. They face very difficulty to reply this question, but you should be bold enough to speak to the interviewer because everything before joining the job should be clearly which will be safe side for u. In some situation the candidate may be fired from the job or etc.

This is your chance to talk about your experience and your career goals, not to badmouth a former boss or give a laundry list of reasons for your exit. Instead, focus on what you learned in your previous position and how you are ready to use those skills in a new position.

You may have left your previous job about anykind of reason but it is important not to convey emotions in an interview situation as potential employers can see this sort of attitude as a sign of potential disloyalty. It is always important to give the most positive response possible. It is important that you try to express positive feelings. It is equally important not to apologise for the situation as this can be seen as a sign of weakness.

Here are some sample answers to the interview question “Why did you leave your job?

The company was cutting back and, unfortunately, my job was one of those eliminated.

There isn’t room for growth with my current employer and I’m ready to move on to a new challenge.

I am seeking a position with a stable company with room for growth and opportunity for advancement.

I’m looking for a bigger challenge and to grow my career and I couldn’t job hunt part time while working.

I was laid-off from my last position when our department was eliminated due to corporate restructuring.

I’m relocating to this area due to family circumstances and left my previous position in order to make the move.

I am interested in a new challenge and an opportunity to use my technical skills and experience in a different capacity than I have in the past.

I recently received my degree and I want to utilize my educational background in my next position.

I found myself bored with the work and looking for more challenges.

I am interested in a job with more responsibility, and I am very ready for a new challenge.

After several years in my last position, I’m looking for an company where I can contribute and grow in a team-oriented environment.

I was commuting to the city and spending a significant amount of time each day on travel. I would prefer to be closer to home.

Azim Premzi – Wipro Chief takes Pay cut . This is definitely a call for other Indian CEOs to take similar cuts rather than laying odd employees in these uncertain time

Wipro’s chief and IT czar, Azim Premji had suggested to the Karnataka government to charge more tax from the tech pros to improve the ailing Bangalore infrastructure. From the Azim Premji’s statement all the IT Professionals got a very big shock and are in a very bad condition to face the situation of what the Azim Premji decided. Mr. Premji’s statement had made lots
of IT Professionals mind to think What’s next? Because since last 5 months IT field is in very bad condition. The software boom is not ok.Every New morning has became a new tension for them that which kind of news they are going to hear after going to office. And now the Premji’s statement again put the IT Professional in tension that,in reality if the tax for the IT Professionals are increased then what would be their condition.

The IT Professionals express their feelings from Premji’s statement as :
But the IT Professionals think the decision taken by Premji is not correct because this decision should be applicable to al the employees in India. Everyone think that IT Professionals earn Handsome salary but they don’t think how much they struggle to earn that.If IT professionals should to be taxed more, then why spare the same IT companies. Let’s follow a similar policy i.e. more profits, more taxes. IT professionals are earning handsome salaries but for how long. Are all the IT jobs guaranteed? How long is this boom going to last? They earn salary and save for the rainy day.

Why is it that the class salaried person should pay the tax? What about all the businessmen and others who drive Mercs, wear Rolex and live in villas?. It is simple for them to buy everything on the company’s name and save on tax. Government should do something to bring them in the tax net.Mr.Premji earns billions and he does not want to pay taxes for that. Moreover he wants the taxes reduced for IT Products.

Because of the hefty pay packets It Professionals are already paying more taxes. As taxes is just a percentage of the monthly income. If taxes are raised, many of the IT Professionals want their salaries increased accordingly to absorb the extra tax. If hefty pay is taxed it should not be with IT professionals alone. It should be with a lot of managers in Manufacturing, FMCG, Banking, and other companies who receive hefty pay packets as well.

Why should a particular profession be taxed more? Executives in the other sectors don’t earn less. Kindly refer to the list of highest paid executives. What about the sacrifices that IT professionals have to make on the personal front due to typical nature of their work. The government babus should be completely removed, who sit all day in office doing nothing, but just sipping their chairs or spitting paan across the office aisle!! After all the IT Professionals who works 14-15 hrs in the office has a higher responsibility towards the upliftment of the country, and also to share the substantial part of the pay-packet of the netas, the bureaucrasy etc.

IT organizations and the business barons who are making millions through IT should be taxed heavily. Not the IT professionals who earn a tiny fraction of that by working morning 9 to evening 10 throughout the year.

Layoffs have became very common now a days. These Layoffs are very painful and stressful for companies as well as to the employees.

If the company has decided that layoffs are necessary and they announced it then one can make the best of a bad situation by taking different steps to come over from this situation. If things go perfectly, employees won’t ever have to do layoffs.

Layoffs are a major event and should be handled by top company executives. An advance notice should be given to the employees about the mass layoffs. As soon as the company know that they will have to do a layoff, if they hold a meeting and tell to employees about the reason for doing layoffs then this will allow some forewarning to the employees so that the actually layoff isn’t such a shock. It is a terrible thing for a family when parents goes to work daily, and one day comes home unemployed. Often one of the questions that people ask is, “how am I going to tell my family?” If your employees get some warning beforehand, they will be able to prepare their families for the possibility of a layoff.

After company layoffs, many survivors are required to cope with demands as a result of additional work that was previously performed by former co-workers. In many cases, the increased workload causes a decrease in effectiveness and productivity. Unexpected stress is caused to the workers. If you are in a similar situation, in order to increase effectiveness at work after surviving company layoffs consider implementing these pro-active strategies for approaching your job.

If you experience a layoff or job termination, you are usually eligible for unemployment. Apply immediately following the layoff. Your employer can not contest payment on a layoff or job termination as this is not a performance based loss. Also, you can have unemployment and severance at the same time. Do not forget to apply for unemployment immediately, even if you get severance. Stay aggressive in your job search. The market is very competitive. Use resources like free seminars at the unemployment office, library, community to help create new skills or enhance skills. This is also a good way to network.

Focus on your strengths. A negative attitude can affect your people skills and reduce your chances at finding a new job. Write out a list of your strengths and careers successes to boost your confidence. This will also help will preparation for possible interview questions.

Getting to hard numbers let’s assume that a company A sacks 10 per cent of its employees and promises to pay 12-months’ salary in advance. Also, let’s assume that on an average these employees earn Rs 20,000 per month. This will help them get Rs 2,40,000 in advance. This amount if planned and spent productively can help them cope financially till the time they get another job. If you have a debt of any kind — home loan, personal loan, credit card payment etc — make provision for that first from the money that you can squeeze out from your ex-employer. There is no point in defaulting on your debt as it may come to hound you later — via your credit rating — when your financial condition improves.

If this happpens then no employee can get into depress after getting the pink slip. The company has to think over the future of the employees because the top of the company will get an idea previously about the financial situation of the company then and there only they take the decision of layoff,s and if such situation occurs then they should provide saalry for atlest 4 months till that they can get settled in a next job.
