Banking is one of the most required after career option between the students. It is an entry into a well paid, secure and status career. These jobs are meant for commerce/economics students but the fact is that majority of bank officers are from different streams of education. Now appointing management graduates, CAs and CFAs but bright graduates from any subject can get entry in the Public sector Banks through an “All India Examination” conducted by them. Now banks are in the mutual funds, securitization business credit cards, and consumer loans, housing loans, housing loans besides trading in gold and forex activities.

Generally banks look for good communication skills, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal with customers, an alert nature, and basic knowledge of the industry. Good computer knowledge is always preferred.

There is a growing need for better and better banking facilities due to international trade and industrial liberalization which have contributed a lot to the change in the banking environment. All this has created an increase in opportunities in banking jobs and a requirement for people with marketing and technological skills apart from financial background.

There are various different levels at which a person can join the bank namely clerk, a Grade I officer, a Grade II officer or as a manager.

A good banker is a person who has a well-organized mind with an eye for detail. It helps in maintenance of records accurately and neatly. The person should have a mathematical aptitude. Employees joining as officers should be able to lead, motivate and manage the bank staff. Good verbal and written communication skills help in effective interaction with the clients as well as the staff. Integrity and honesty play a major role in all dealings related to money, staff and clients. A person responsible for foreign exchange transactions needs to have a sharp, quick and analytical mind.

There are front office personnel in all banks, and then there are supervisors who handle most back office operations like completion of transactions, general ledger work, and overall supervision. Banks are now offering good salary packages.

State Bank of India is the top commercial bank of the country. The Private sector with the entry of new banks mostly promoted by the major Financial Institutions like IDBI, ICICI etc has provided competition to both Public sector and Foreign Banks. They are more technology know-how and offer better salaries than Public sector Banks. Unlike public sector banks, the promotional avenues are not time-bound.

Foreign Banks are the most sought after due to their salary packages comparable to the best in the country and better job profiles. Public sector Banks recruit mainly graduates at the entry level on the basis of All India Level examination. However professionals like engineers, doctors, technologists, lawyers, ex-defence officers etc are recruited on senior positions through All India tests.

Private sector/Foreign Banks prefer to take MBA’s, CA’s etc at junior positions through Campus recruitment and interviews. However, at the senior positions they opt for experienced bankers. Thus the officers from Public sector Banks become the natural choice for such positions. Thus job-hopping has become a well-accepted norm in the Industry.

Therefore joining a Public sector Bank as Probationary Officer (Direct Officer) on the basis All India exam has become a stepping stone for the career growth in the Banking Industry.

Selection procedure for RBI

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the topmost financial institution in India which makes all the policies and regulations for the other banks. It conducts tests for three types of entry level positions:

Clerical grade

Grade I officers

Grade II officers

The entry point for clerical staff is in the cash department as examiners of coins and notes. They are promoted to the next grade when they successfully clear the relevant examinations after 5-10 years of service.

There is an All India Exam conducted for class I posts. Graduates, Post Graduates, CA’s, MBA’s in the 21-26 years of age group are eligible.

The candidates are tested in

Logical Reasoning,

Mental Ability,

Numerical Aptitude

General English

The examination is in parts.

Paper I is a written test comprising of General Mental Ability (Objective type).

Paper II is a subjective one which has English Essays/Comprehension/Precise writing etc.

Paper III is on Economics and Social problems.

Selected candidates are shortlisted for an interview which forms the basis for the final selection.

Selection procedure for other nationalized banks

Anyone in the age group of 18-26 years having a degree is eligible for appearing in the written test. The format of the test is similar to the RBI examination. Test is followed by an interview. Clerical staff gets recruited through regional boards. The eligibility and test format are the same as for PO examination.

Selection procedure for nationalized

commercial banks

Commercial banks regularly advertise through their Banking Service Recruitment Board (BSRB) to recruit Probationary Officers (‘PO’). Each region has its own BSRB which carries out the recruitment. Eligibility is a graduate in any discipline with an upper age limit of 28 years.

Information about the examination

The office grade examination has 2 parts – objective and subjective.

Written Test

The test of reasoning judges the analytical and problem solving skills of the candidate. The English language test focuses on the grammar, synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary etc. General awareness tests the understanding of environmental and social issues, people and events etc.

The quantitative aptitude test measures the numerical ability and accuracy in mathematical calculations. The questions range from purely numeric calculations to problems of arithmetic reasoning, graph and table reading, percentage analysis, categorization and quantitative analysis.

The subjective part of the paper typically involves imagining oneself in a situation such as observer in a public meeting. One has to then comprehend the situation, provide unique observations and analysis.

Interviews

Selection in the interview is based on the knowledge of the subject of study, personality and awareness. Candidate’s communication skills and leadership qualities are judged during the interview. Typically 30% of the candidates get selected after the interview.

Cognizant said to the press on Tuesday that its revenue rose 34.4% to $1.49 billion in the quarter ended June, and in the process displaced Wipro Technologies as India’s No. 3 IT firm in terms of revenue. Wipro reported revenue of $1.41 billion in the quarter.

Cognizant said it is expecting revenue of $1.57 billion in the September quarter. Wipro’s guidance for the quarter lies in the range of $1.39-1 .42 billion. Cognizant has also narrowed the revenue gap with Infosys to less than $200 million. Infosys earned $1.671 billion in June quarter, and its guidance is $1.73 billion for September quarter.

The NASDAQ-listed firm, which has more than 70% of its software developers in India, has also been destructive on the recruitment front. In the June quarter, Cognizant net added 7,200 professionals as against Wipro’s 2,894 and Infosys’ 3,041. Only TCS recruited more, with a net addition of 11,700 people in the quarter.

Cognizant ended the quarter with over 1, 18,300 employees globally. The company added 76 new clients and closed the quarter with 721 active clients.

Geographic composition of revenues shows Cognizant earned 77.8% from North America, 18.6% from Europe and 3.6% from Asia Pacific, West Asia and Latin America.

Analysts had expected profit earnings of 66 cents a share, on revenue of $1.46 billion. The company reported profit earnings of 67 cents a share on revenues of $1.49 billion.

President and CEO Francisco D’Souza said to press reporters that “We believe that our ability to attract the world’s best talent and our unique global delivery model infused with deep consulting and domain expertise are among the reasons why we see continued demand for our services that deliver both top line and bottom-line value to our clients, and continued industry-leading growth for Cognizant”.

The company forecast a strong third quarter (July-September) at a time when rival Indian IT services exporters have warned of slowing technology spending. Infosys reported quarterly profit that missed expectations and warned it could face slow client spending. TCS flagged concerns about economic uncertainty, and Wipro said the uncertain economic environment had resulted in volatility in business, but it was not seeing delays in the IT spending decision-making process by customers.

Cognizant has projected third-quarter earnings of at least 76 cents a share, on revenue of at least $1.57 billion. Cognizant has also revised the guidance upwards to at least 32% for the full calendar year 2011 (from at least 29% announced last quarter and at least 26% at the start of the year).

President and CEO Francisco D’Souza said to press reporters that “We continue to see stronger than anticipated demand for our increasing range of services across the industries we serve. Over this past year, we have seen clients seeking our services not just to drive operational efficiencies, but also to transform their businesses to adapt to next generation technologies and to a new generation of ‘born digital’ workers and consumers.

Software Industry

[...]

Lot of people in India are thinking about the future of Indian software industry, whether it is a good career or not. More and more students in college are confused whether they should go to the software field or not.

Computers are powerful but it doesn’t mean that the computer industry generates fulfilling, highly paid, and secure long-term careers for the employees. If you hear about a plastic surgeon getting rich it isn’t exciting because getting an MD and completing a residency is a long and arduous process. The problem with this analysis is survivorship bias. You look at the wealth of all the middle managers and C coders at Microsoft without reflecting on the thousands of other software companies that were started in the same year and that are dead now. Virtually 100 percent of plastic surgeons are rich whereas the average fate of a software company employee is unappealing indeed.

If you just love working with computers then probably you’ll be happy in the software industry because you’ll be getting paid for doing what you love. The software industry does not have a good reputation with ustomers. The small vendors go out of business and the big vendors charge different prices. A further problem with working for software companies that the innovative ones tend to be fairly young organizationally. Thus they don’t have a lot of good metrics in place for evaluating employee performance. Promotions may be random or based on who is sucking up to the senior executives rather than on achievement.

Moreover, the number of software engineers being produced in these western countries are not enough so companies have to eventually transfer their work to India. Most Indian software professionals are ardworking and are able to devote more time to work than their western counterparts. Job placements in most engineering colleges is very good with many companies like Wipro, Infosys, Satyam and several multinationals competing to hire good students. Even the starting salaries which are offered to Indian software professionals are usually much more than the highest salary a regular government employee has ever received in his 30 years career.

But the fact which many are missing is that software industry (like other industries) is also about supply and demand, the demand of engineers being high as of now and jobs are everywhere. These days almost every student in India after completing his 10th class board exam starts to prepare for engineering entrance exams so that he/she can eventually become a software engineer. Every year hundreds of new engineering colleges are opening up all over India and there are over 5 lakh engineers graduating every year and the number will continue to increase. Even people from Civil and Mechanical engineering are entering software. There are additionally lakhs of MCA, BSC Computer Science and others from NIIT/Aptech etc comming out but all are at good jobs.

Due to our high population, there is competition in almost every field in India. With more and more educated people in India, there will be even more engineers in the future, and software competition will be on a rise. ” Software Industry situation is just like when the stock market goes up, everyone thinks this is the best way to make money, but when it comes down everyone loses.”

India scores in areas of technical expertise, quality, flexibility, cost control, competitive advantage and also its quality English speaking workforce. There is, perhaps, no other field that has made such rapid inroads in such a short span of time.

What is the future of BPO in India?

By the end of 2008, this industry is expected to employ over 1.1 million Indians. According to a study conducted by NASSCOM and a leading business intelligence company, Mckinsey & Co, the ITES-BPO industry is growing at over 50 percent per annum in terms of job creation.

There are companies that are making million-dollar investments, setting up offices in India to serve their global customers. According to Mckinsey, by 2008-09, revenue from the BPO industry may go up to 17 -24 billion and a workforce of 1.5 to 2 million will be employed by the industry. It is certainly here to stay for a long time, so youngsters should have no doubts about its stability.

Conclusion:-

The philosophy behind BPO is specific. “DO what you do best and leave everything else to business process outsourcers”. BPO saves precious management time and resources and allows focus while building upon core competencies. Using business process outsourcing helps financial services firms to refocus on their core competencies. This, in turn, provides managements with an environment where among others, cost reduction and improvement in service quality can happen simultaneously.

By: Chris Robertson

If you were to survey store managers, merchandisers, buyers, or other high-level retail executives, virtually all of them would say that their first retail jobs were in customer service or in retail sales. They may have started part-time when they were students, took seasonal mall jobs during the holiday season, or started full-time after taking classes in merchandising or in management. For almost every retail professional, though, what began as a retail job turned into a retail career.

How did they work their way up the ladder of retail work? First, they built a foundation based on customer service and sales. This is partly because, when it comes down to it, every successful retail operation is built upon customer satisfaction. A retailer that offers great prices and good merchandise may do well initially, but if the retailer doesn’t take care of customers, the operation is no more than a flash in the pan. Therefore, a proven commitment and passion for exceptional customer service is necessary before advancement is possible.

But the act of keeping customers happy is only one component of enjoying career advancement through retail opportunities. Equally important are the skills you acquire while developing your talent for customer service. After all, customer satisfaction requires a high degree of efficiency (for example, quickly ringing up sales), the ability to troubleshoot (determining what the problem or challenge is and how to fix it), strong interpersonal skills (remaining calm when a customer is upset), and great communication (both in listening and speaking).

Customer service or sales jobs in retail quickly separate those with star potential from those who simply take store jobs out of convenience. Store managers understand that those who have stellar customer service skills directly contribute to the profitability of the enterprise. After all, you are instrumental in establishing and maintaining customer relationships, which result in repeat customers and increased sales. Because retailers almost always promote from within the company, you are well positioned to move up in the company.

As you gain experience in customer service or sales, you are likely to discover other positions that appeal to you. Perhaps you would like to explore retail merchandising, and assume responsibility for merchandise displays, signage, and everything else the customer sees when he or she enters the store. Merchandising is an exciting job that engages your creativity, your understanding of human nature, and your knowledge of the products your store carries.

Another retail career path is in management. Perhaps you like the idea of being in charge of every aspect of your department, hiring and managing employees, and bringing your personal touch to the customer experience. Once you have demonstrated that you have an aptitude for management, you can rapidly advance up the management ranks, moving on to store manager, regional manager, or even district manager.

Retail career advancement can take many different forms. Taking advantage of in-house promotion opportunities is key, but you can help increase the speed with which you move up the ladder by volunteering for company trainings, attending management training programs at community colleges, developing relevant technology-related skills, and taking classes in specialty areas like merchandising.

Wherever your retail career path leads, keep in mind that entry-level retail jobs give you the chance to develop a variety of skills that will serve you well.

The employment generation from this sector is compared to other hot sectors like Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Information Technology (IT).<o :p></o>

Answer these questions:<o :p></o>

Do you have an interest in understanding the risks (life and non life) and methods to cover risk?<o :p></o>

Do you have the diligence to continuously improve yourself in one particular field even if you believe you are one of the best at what you do?<o :p></o>

Do you have the heart to help your clientele reap the most out of a risk coverage?<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

If your answers to two or more of these questions are yes, then maybe you should try looking into the building a career in Insurance Industry.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Insurance may be described as a social device to reduce or eliminate risk of life and property. Under the plan of insurance, a large number of people associate themselves by sharing risk, attached to individual. Insurance Career is the employment option that lately came to India’s innovative career seekers. When liberalization policies opened up ground to Indian private sector Insurance companies and FDI capital, the growth thirsty sector started to boom. India’s general public was also in a hurry to receive the service oriented insurance business. The Insurance sector not only provide protective shield to the lives and assets of the nation but generate thousands of jobs and career opportunities for India (insurance is second larges new age industry after BPO).<o :p></o>

Insurance companies are in business of covering the risk. The risk, which can be insured against include fire, the peril of sea, death, incident, & burglary. Any risk contingent upon these may be insured against at a premium commensurate with the risk involved.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

In a bookish definition – “Insurance is actually a contract between two parties whereby one party called insurer undertakes in exchange for a fixed sum called premium to pay the other party happening of a certain event”. The process of evaluating risk and asking a premium is known as underwriting. In simple words – Insurance is a contract whereby, in return for the payment of premium by the insured, the insurers pay the financial losses suffered by the insured as a result of the occurrence of unforeseen events. With the help of Insurance, large number of people exposed to a similar risk make contributions to a common fund out of which the losses suffered by the unfortunate few, due to accidental events, are made good.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Positions in Insurance Industry<o :p></o>
Insurance industry requires people with diverse background such as marketing, sales, distribution, underwriting, operations, claims processing, investment experts, medical experts, agents, actuaries, risk managers and surveyors. Here some of the key positions are explained:<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Insurance Advisor / Agent: The old saying – people do not buy insurance – it is sold to them. The advisor or agent is like last mile connectivity between Insurance Company and customer. A very vital link – the advisor helps them select an insurance policy and also aids in the ensuing paperwork and documentation. The advisor’s job is a hardcore sales job (mostly commission based) and is not a one time sale. Advisor has to maintain relationship with customer over a long period. To be successful at this job you need to have very high degree of persuasive skills. You do not need very high qualifications bu may need to pass IRDA exam to become an advisor. Advisors earn up to 10-15000 Rs. if they sell about five policies – and of course there is no limit for people with fire in their belly.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

In most companies advisors and commission agents, there are chances for advisors to become Unit Managers in due course with few companies.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Unit Manager: Unit Manager recruits advisors and motivates them to do more business. They prove a vital link between insurance agents and company. The Unit Managers are usually recruited from non insurance sales background and they earn between 2 to 4 lacs per annum.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Branch Manager: The key role of Branch Manager to help achieve branch targets through his team of Sales managers, Unit Managers etc. They develop the sales network, chalk out the sales & marketing strategies for the Branch and help recruiting & inducting new Unit Managers. They sometimes joint sales call with their team. Branch managers in mid size cities earn somewhere between 3.5 to 8 lacs.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Insurance Underwriters: Underwriters are the one who decide if insurance is provided and under what terms. They are needed to identify and calculate the risk of loss from policyholders, establish who receives a policy, determine the appropriate premium, and write policies that cover this risk.<o :p></o>

<o :p></o>

Actuaries: These are the guys who crunch the numbers (well they use mathematical theories, probability, historical data, compound interest, statistics and financial techniques) to decide on what premium is fixed for one category of customers. While underwriters decide on case by case basis (by using guidelines provided by Actuaries) Actuaries are the one who create insurance premium tables. If you like numbers – maths, statistics you can be a cut for this jobs but you need to be a member of Actuarial Society of India (which you become only after clearing some eighteen papers – mostly maths and stats related). This may soud tough but rewards a galore – they earn somewhere between Rs. 8 to 20 lacs per annum.<o :p></o>
